In its 12/2015 edition, the Business Magazine Capital lists Prof. Karsten Borgwardt (35) from D-BSSE as one of the "Top 40 under 40" from Germany in the category "State and Society", which includes 12 scientists. For the second time since 2014, Prof. Borgwardt was honored as an expert in Data Mining and Bioinformatics. 

High-density microelectrode arrays developed by BEL were used to study neuronal circuit asymmetry and its role in the pathophysiology of nystagmus, a neurological disease, as recently published in Neuron.

The Society for Biological Engineering's Bailey award endowed by Cytos Biotechnology, recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of biological engineering. In memory of Professor James Bailey for his many pioneering contributions to biotechnology, this award is presented to an individual who has had an important impact on biological engineering and whose achievements have advanced the profession.

On 8 October 2015, the newly founded Biotech Alumni Group held its first official event. It was the perfect opportunity to introduce the board members and the objectives of the new alumni group. Not only did this lead to interesting discussions, many alumni present also jumped at the chance to sign up for membership.

The ETH Zürich iGEM Team 2015 were awarded with “Best Model” and “Best Parts Collection” at the international Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition in Boston, MA.

Professor Petra Dittrich has been awarded the Heinrich Emmanuel Merck Award for her pioneering work on immunological assays combined with microfluidic platforms for single-cell analysis. The award, which is worth € 15,000, was given to Professor Dittrich at Euroanalysis 2015 conference in Bordeaux (France) on September 10, 2015. 

The governments of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land have jointly approved the investment of 10 million francs to D-BSSE aimed at supporting the department and enhancing the cooperation of D-BSSE and the University of Basel.

The MIT Alumni Association, in partnership with swissnex Boston and the ETHZ Alumni Association, brought together two of the world’s leading researchers in synthetic biology for a lively conversation and networking reception on Thursday evening, June 25, at the Koch Institute for Cancer Research at MIT, in Cambridge, MA.

Janina Linnik won the first edition of "FameLab" in Basel with a short talk on her influenza-vaccination project.

Tetiana Serdiuk (Müller Group) published her article Observing a Lipid-Dependent Alteration in Single Lactose Permeases in Cell Structure. Stefan Weiser's photo of two fishermen made it onto the cover.

Sven Panke, Nina Wagner, Andreas Bosshart, Jurek Failmezger and Matthias Bechtold published their article A Separation-Integrated Cascade Reaction to Overcome Thermodynamic Limitations in Rare-Sugar Synthesis in Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

A highly commended Award (£ 5000) in the 3Rs Prize competition 2014 of the British National Center for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research was granted to Olivier Frey and coworkers.

At its meeting of 4/5 March 2015, the ETH Board appointed Prof. Jörg Steling to Full Professor.

ETH Zurich is the new coordinating organization of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network on “Machine Learning for Personalized Medicine” (MLPM2012). Prof. Borgwardt from D-BSSE continues to act as the Scientific Coordinator of the network. Its goal is to train 14 highly qualified early-stage researchers in the fascinating and rapidly emerging field of Machine Learning in Personalized Medicine. 

Prof. Tay and his student Ryan Kellogg have published a landmark paper in Cell, where they used microfluidic single-cell analysis to show how dynamic immune signals lead to efficient gene expression, and the beneficial role of biological noise in this process.

At its meeting of 17/18 September 2014, the ETH Board appointed 15 professors at ETH Zurich in accordance with the applications submitted by the ETH President Ralph Eichler, and awarded the title of professor to one individual.

DNA sequencing has revolutionised life sciences. Now it’s medicine’s turn: thanks to genetic analysis, treatment tailored to individual patients will be a standard feature in the future. With a new competence centre, ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich are aiming to lead the way in personalised medicine.

D-BSSE Professor Karsten Borgwardt is one of the "Top 40 under 40" in Science in/from Germany in 2014, an annual ranking of the Business Journal Capital since 2007.

The German "Handelsblatt" published an article about Prof. Karsten Borgwardt who will begin researching at the D-BSSE on June 1st, 2014.

Upon application of the President of ETH Zurich, Professor Ralph Eichler, and the President of EPFL, Professor Patrick Aebischer, at its meeting of 5/6 March 2014 the ETH Board appointed a total of 10 individuals as professors.

Prof. Paro’s article Hsp90@chromatin.nucleus: an emerging hub of a networker was listed as one of the “Top Ten Ed Board Favorite Articles of 2013” by Trends in Cell Biology.
