Focused-ion beam modification of microcantilevers allows to tailor their mass sensitivity to monitor single adherent living cells.

The results of this study from our group have been published in Nano Letters.

Ilaria Incaviglia and colleagues showed that tipless rectangular cantilevers can be modified by introducing a rectangular window using a focused ion beam (see picture) to carry several advantages for living cell mass measurements, such as the restriction of cell movements and improved mass sensitivity. These results open up the possibility to evaluate the growth of single cells in response to different treatments/substrates.
