Open Postdoc and PhD Positions

Postdoc position: Development of in vitro skin model including sensory perception

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join an exciting collaboration between the Bio Engineering Laboratory (Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zürich) and Novartis, both located in Basel. This unique opportunity combines academic innovation with pharmaceutical expertise to develop advanced skin models to study barrier function and itching.

Leveraging cutting-edge advanced cellular models, and bioengineering and microfluidic approaches, the project is aimed at developing skin models that include sensory perception for understanding immunological skin diseases and for applications in drug discovery. The Postdoc will have a dual role in setting up the 3D skin models and optimizing sensor technology (e.g. TEER and TEWL) to enable a robust assessment of skin barrier functionality. In addition, itch perception will be studied by the integration of iPSC-derived sensory neurons.

Considering the dual aspects of this position, we are looking for a candidate with a strong background in biology and engineering (e.g., bioengineering, biotechnology, or related fields) with a solid knowledge of molecular biology and cell culturing, preferably in microphysiological systems. Important experience includes primary cell culturing, work with advanced in vitro models, epithelial/endothelial barrier characterization, and iPSC differentiation; skills in optical microscopy, sensor development and integration, as well as in electrophysiology are a plus. Academic excellence, a professional attitude, and a self-driven nature are expected. Strong communication skills, fluency in English, and a proactive mindset are essential for thriving in this collaborative, international environment.

The position is fully funded for initially 2 years and can be extended to up to 4 years. The starting date is flexible but must be before 06-2026. The application deadline is February 15, 2026

A complete application package includes a CV, a concise  and specific motivation statement for the advertised position (maximum 1 page), a complete transcript of records, and at least two reference letters (or contact details of referees). For more information on the position, please contact exclusively via e-mail: .

Postdoc Stipend Opportunities

Postdoctoral researchers who wish to join our lab are also encouraged to apply for postdoctoral fellowships.

ETH Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended to foster high-potential, young researchers who have already demonstrated excellence in terms of internationally competitive achievements at an early stage of their professional career. Stipends can be in any field, the application deadlines are March 1, Sept 1 of every year.

external page EMBO Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years and support post-doctoral research visits to laboratories throughout Europe and the world. International exchange is a key feature in the application process. While applications are accepted throughout the year, there are two evaluation periods every year. The evaluation committee meets in May and November. Any complete application received by Friday, 10 February 2017, at 2 pm CET will be evaluated in the spring meeting, with interviews conducted in April. Applications received by Friday, 11 August 2017, at 2 pm CEST, will be evaluated in the autumn meeting, with interviews in October. Outcomes will be announced on the first week of June and the first week of December.

external page Human Frontier Science Program Postdoctoral Fellowships are for early career scientists to broaden their research skills by moving into new areas of study while working in a new country. Long-Term Fellowships (LTF) are for applicants with a Ph.D. in a biological discipline to do a project, which is significantly different from their Ph.D. or postdoctoral work. Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF) are for applicants with a Ph.D. from outside the life sciences (e.g. in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or computer sciences). HFSP fellowships are for three years, and the application deadline is usually in August.

external page EU-financed Marie-Curie Stipends are available to researchers regardless of their nationality or field of research. In addition to generous research funding, scientists have the possibility to gain experience abroad and in the private sector, and to complete their training with competences or disciplines useful for their careers. For obtaining financial support to work in our group, the external page Individual Fellowships (IF) is the most suitable scheme.

In all cases, an important criterion is excellence in scientific research evidenced by a strong publication record. Motivated candidates should contact us at least one month before the respective application deadlines.
