Engineering Postdoc Opening for Development of a High-density CMOS Microelectrode Array Setup for Use with Retinal Preparations and Optogenetics

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic engineering Postdoc, who will want to work in an international environment in Basel, Switzerland. In the framework of an SNF-funded project, titled “Restoring high-resolution vision using optogenetics”, explanted human retinae will be investigated and recorded from by means of CMOS-based high density microelectrode arrays (HD-MEAs). The overall goal of this project is to combine advanced optical methods for light-stimulus shaping with high-spatiotemporal-resolution electrophysiology and cutting-edge genetic targeting strategies in an effort to restore high-resolution vision in patients. Holographic and light stimulation will be used to trigger the optogenetics on preparations directly atop the CMOS chips.

A suitable candidate should have a solid background in nano- and microengineering and experience in cleanroom fabrication processes. Further, experience with experimental setups, large-scale data acquisition and analysis, FPGA programming skills and knowledge of Python and C++ are important assets. The project is highly interdisciplinary (microtechnology/electronics/biology) and requires good communication skills and a proactive work attitude. The candidate must be able to fluently communicate in English (oral and written) and be willing to work and take over responsibility in a highly interactive international environment with other Postdocs and PhD students. Moreover, the candidate will also be involved in project management and acquisition of national and international grants. The position is planned for up to 4 years.

Postdoc Stipend Opportunities

Postdoctoral researchers who wish to join our lab are also encouraged to apply for postdoctoral fellowships.

ETH Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended to foster high-potential, young researchers who have already demonstrated excellence in terms of internationally competitive achievements at an early stage of their professional career. Stipends can be in any field, the application deadlines are March 1, Sept 1 of every year.

external pageEMBO Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years and support post-doctoral research visits to laboratories throughout Europe and the world. International exchange is a key feature in the application process. While applications are accepted throughout the year, there are two evaluation periods every year. The evaluation committee meets in May and November. Any complete application received by Friday, 10 February 2017, at 2 pm CET will be evaluated in the spring meeting, with interviews conducted in April. Applications received by Friday, 11 August 2017, at 2 pm CEST, will be evaluated in the autumn meeting, with interviews in October. Outcomes will be announced on the first week of June and the first week of December.

external pageHuman Frontier Science Program Postdoctoral Fellowships are for early career scientists to broaden their research skills by moving into new areas of study while working in a new country. Long-Term Fellowships (LTF) are for applicants with a Ph.D. in a biological discipline to do a project, which is significantly different from their Ph.D. or postdoctoral work. Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF) are for applicants with a Ph.D. from outside the life sciences (e.g. in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or computer sciences). HFSP fellowships are for three years, and the application deadline is usually in August.

external pageEU-financed Marie-Curie Stipends are available to researchers regardless of their nationality or field of research. In addition to generous research funding, scientists have the possibility to gain experience abroad and in the private sector, and to complete their training with competences or disciplines useful for their careers. For obtaining financial support to work in our group, the external pageIndividual Fellowships (IF) is the most suitable scheme.

In all cases, an important criterion is excellence in scientific research evidenced by a strong publication record. Motivated candidates should contact us at least one month before the respective application deadlines.
