Next ETHZ iGEM project only 2022

Dear iGEM aficionados, we have long looked at the development of the SARS-CoV2 situation in Switzerland and the US, and with much regret we have come to the conclusion that we do not feel we can guarantee an ETH iGEM project in 2021. It remains unclear how the lab situation in the summer will be and how far vaccination will extend. Therefore, and with a very heavy heart, we have decided to postpone the start of our next iGEM campaign to March 2022.

About iGEM

iGEM is a summer competition in Synthetic Biology. It has been initiated in summer 2004 in the US at MIT and went international in 2005. We expect more than 300 schools from all over North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia for the 2020 edition of the synthetic biology summer competition for the design of biological systems (external page iGEM).

ETH iGEM Project

For the ETH Zurich team, we are recruiting a team of around 8-12 undergraduate (Bachelor level, 5th or 6th semester) and graduate (Master level) students from biological and engineering disciplines to

Design a biological system along different levels of abstraction.
Translate this system design into DNA.
Test the successful design experimentally.
Present your achievements on a website, poster, and during presentation at the external page Giant Jamboree.

Participation involves on your part:

Preparation tailored to your personal background as an engineer or biologist.
The design and testing of a novel biological system, involving theoretical and wet-lab work.
A trip to the world finals in Boston, US, from 29 October to 2 November 2020. At the Giant Jamboree, this year's projects from all over the world will be presented (and rewarded!). You will compete against teams from Harvard, Berkeley, MIT, Princeton, Cambridge (UK), Imperial College, EPFL, China, Japan, and many more.
Hard work and a lot of fun between April and October 2020!

Past Projects and Achievements

¹2005 was the first year that iGEM was an international competition, with 10 teams from the USA and teams from Canada (U Toronto), UK (Cambridge), and Switzerland (ETHZ). iGEM's first installation ever was in 2004 with a set of 5 US teams.

²The first international installation of iGEM was in 2005, and judging had still a certain "ironic" quality, therefore the 4 awards of the ETHZ team are not mentioned here. If you are interested, please see here: external page http://2006.igem.org/wiki/index.php/IGEM_2005_Awards

³The medal system was introduced in 2007, so no corresponding awards are available for 2005 and 2006. To obtain a medal, an increasing number of quality criteria have to be met. For gold, this includes e.g. adherence to standards, experimental validations, contributions to the set of standard biological parts, outreach, human practices, etc.

⁴In 2015, a new category was introduced: teams that were shortlisted for a given award received the status of a "nominee".
