Best Poster Award at the Microfluidics conference, organized by European Molecular Biology Laboratory (external pageEMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, went to Wei Wei for his contribution titled: "3D in vitro blood-brain-barrier model with integrated TEER-sensor for investigating the pathogenesis of cerebral ischemia". In vitro blood-brain-barrier (BBB) models are essential tools to recapitulate the barrier function and to investigate how injuries may affect the barrier physiology. Wei Wei and coauthors introduced a dynamic BBB model on a microfluidic chip, which featured a transparent, integrated transendothelial-electrical-resistance (TEER) sensor to monitor the integrity of the barrier. The barrier model was formed by a co-culture of human astrocytes, human pericytes, and human brain endothelial cells. The cellular arrangement and the transparent electrodes enabled real-time TEER monitoring and simultaneous live, high-resolution imaging of the barrier.
