Manual Microscopes

Our facility holds several (semi)-manual microscopes, which are set up as walk-up instruments where every user can quickly check samples for fluorescence and morphology and manually take high-quality images with a sensitive cameras. These systems are not equipped with environmental control, nor motorized positioning stages.

The Echo Revolve R4  is a simple manual fluorescence microscope with an intuitive software that allows you to aqcuire single or multiple images from slides or plates - perfect for quick sample checking and documentation. Its special feature is that the whole microscope is revolvable allowing its use in both, upright and inverted mode. No booking or training needed (its not in IRIS), just walk up and use it.

  • 12MP color camera for true color images in transmission
  • 5MP CMOS camera for black and white images (fluorescence channels)
  • 4 fluorescence channels (DAPI/GFP/Cy3/Cy5)
  • Easy z-stacks with automatic EDF & MIP
  • Intuitive and easy to use software via an iPad
  • Export images via USB, AirDrop or networktion

The Nikon SMZ25 Stereo Microscope (Nikon SMZ25 Stereo) is an upright system with a large, motorized zoom range of 25:1, and both transmission and fluorescence imaging modes.  This macro-to-microscope is currently equipped with a 0.5x objective lens, allowing for magnifications from 0.63x to 15.75x. This makes it possible to observe an entire 35mm Petri dish at once, or to zoom in to the scale where single mammalian cells can be identified.

  • Microscope base: Nikon SMZ25
  • Light source: Nikon Intensilight
  • Filter cubes: GFP, iRFP
  • CameraHamamatsu ORCA-Flash4.0 V2
  • Specialty: Motorized focus & zoom over a large magnification range (FOV 42mm – 1.68mm)

In addition, the facility features nine functionally equivalent construction kits for "Do-It-Yourself" (DIY) microscopes which are made for teaching purposes. Designed in-house, these microscopes-on-a-rail can be built-up component-by-component into fully functional epi-fluorescence imaging systems. Complete with mobile workstation, teaching manual and demo samples, these systems are available upon special request, either for (self-)teaching or guided instruction of aspiring microscopists.

  • Microscope rail: Thorlabs cage system (30 & 60mm)
  • Light source: CoolLED pE-300
  • CameraHamamatsu ORCA-Flash4.0
  • SpecialtyTeaching & demonstration
