Ageing starts with the thymus
How does a tissue age? The death of cells lead to an imbalance in the tissue and eventually, malfunctioning of the entire organ. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, researchers around D-BSSE immunologist and pediatrician Georg Holländer together with colleagues from institutions in the UK and US, showed how ageing impairs core immunological functions of the mouse thymus, the primary lymphoid organ. The study was published on bioRxiv as not yet peer-reviewed material.
