D-BSSE provides a unique environment for students, scientists and administrative/technical staff alike. The department’s location in Basel, just a one-hour train ride away from ETH’s campuses in Zurich, adds to this uniqueness, offering an attractive portfolio of opportunities for trainings/courses and collaborations with institutions in both Basel and Zurich and beyond.
D-BSSE scientists work in long-standing collaborations with researchers affiliated with hospitals and university institutions in Basel and Zurich; company founders find inspirational and dynamic start-up scenes in both cities; and students benefit from the close vicinity to big players in pharmaceutical and chemical industry in Basel and enjoy student life in two vibrant cities. A wealth of useful information on campus and city life in Basel can be found in the DownloadNewcomers guide (PDF, 61.7 MB) compiled by the Association of Scientific Staff at D-BSSE.

The department is proud of its interdisciplinarity and collaborative spirit, growing diversity and pleasant working climate, aspects which contribute to overall job satisfaction of D-BSSE staff members (see for instance, most recent ETH Employee Survey 2021).
