We are working on a joint
Innosuisse project in collaboration with Myria Biosciences. The project aims to
create new-to-nature molecules using synthetic biology. Our focus lies on non-ribosomal
peptide synthetases (NRPSs), which are naturally modular enzymes. By newly
recombining these modules in a high-throughput fashion, a vast diversity of
artificial biosynthetic NRPS assembly lines is generated. The functionality of these
resulting assembly lines is tested, and potential peptides that are produced
are screened and further characterized. The data obtained in this high
throughput platform is used to train machine learning models for functional
assembly line architectures. A key goal of this research is to discover and generate
novel antibiotics candidates to address one of the most urgent unmet needs in
modern medicine.
