Spread of a novel SARS-CoV-2 variant across Europe in summer 2020
A research team led by the University of Basel and ETH Zurich has identified a novel SARS-CoV-2 variant that has spread widely across Europe in recent months, according to an un-peer-reviewed preprint released this week.
Assessing the compatibility of simultaneously administered drugs
The increase of drug-drug interactions in patients treated with multiple medicines, requires the development of new methods to detect and avoid such complications. Researchers associated with the Bio Engineering Lab, led by Andreas Hierlemann, present an in vitro test system that includes different tissue types in a microfluidic environment. The system enables qualitative and quantitative assessment of metabolism-related drug-drug interactions of anti-cancer prodrugs and anti-retroviral compounds.
Missed the D-BSSE eSymposium? No worries!
On 13 October, the first D-BSSE eSymposium took place dedicated to the question: "What do SARS-CoV-2 genomes tell us about their evolution and spread?" Backed by the success and international reach of this virtual symposium, we are delighted to share with our growing community the recorded video of this conference. Stay wired, the next D-BSSE eSymposium will be announced soon!
Digital publishing: international Open Access Week
An increasing number of scientists at ETH Zurich are using open access to publish their research findings – meaning knowledge can be shared without restriction and used free of charge.
From Basel to Singapore – ETH’s sites around the world
It might sound odd, but ETH Zurich is not just based in Zurich. The university has around 20 sites, including in northwestern Switzerland and in the canton of Graubünden, and even in Asia. They may not be the most obvious of locations, but there are good reasons behind them.
Cells on the run
Many cells in the body must pass through tissue, which sometimes requires them to get out of tight corners. An international research team co-led by D-BSSE has now examined how cells recognise and escape from such bottlenecks. Among the results of the team’s work are new pointers for how to improve immunotherapy.
INVITATION: D-BSSE eSymposium on the spread of SARS-CoV-2
On 13 October 2020, 3-5 PM, D-BSSE is organising its 1st virtual Symposium around the question: "What do SARS-CoV-2 genomes tell us about their evolution and spread?" On the invitation of the organisers Tanja Stadler and Niko Beerenwinkel, Katia Koelle, Associate Professor at the Emory University, Atlanta/GA, USA, will give the keynote address. Please forward this invite to colleagues and friends!
