Are you standing next to the architectural model beside the BSS main entrance? The model provides a great overview on our neighbourhood. You can see, that some of the institutions of the University of Basel, the University Hospital and the Children’s Hospital are just a stone’s throw away from us. Turning around you see an illuminated sculpture on the wall, which illustrates our partnerships and collaborations with institutions on Schällemätteli.

Do you know what was on this very location before, where the D-BSSE home is situated today…? The women’s hospital, from 1896 until its move to the building of the University Hospital in 2002! As a matter of fact, some research at the D-BSSE is contributing valuable knowledge of high relevance to women’s health, pregnancy and organ development in embryos.
The vision of a campus for life sciences becomes reality
Organised by the Cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, in 2009 a competition for the spatial development of this campus named Schällemätteli was held. The University of Basel, in its Strategy 2007, had presented its vision for a Campus dedicated to life sciences on this site in order to accommodate its rapidly growing institutes Biozentrum, Pharmazentrum, and the Department of Biomedicine. The D-BSSE became part of this plan.
In 2012, as the construction plans for the new Biozentrum were well underway, it was about time to start conceptual works for the new home of D-BSSE. Five years after the department’s foundation, it had become clear that the space D-BSSE was renting from the University of Basel on the campus Rosental-Mitte was getting too tight for the growing number of faculty staff and their research groups as well as the steadily increasing number of students enrolled in the two Master's programmes.
Competition, concept, cornerstone laying
In January 2014, ETH Zurich in collaboration with the University of Basel and the Basel public works service organised an international architectural competition to develop the future design of the new home for D-BSSE. In total, 69 teams participated in this contest; after a preselection 17 teams eventually handed in their final architectural projects. The project entitled “540 degrees”, presented by the architect’s office Nickl and Partner headquartered in Munich, Germany, unanimously convinced the jury: the six-story edifice best met the scientific and urban planning requirements, connected the research and public neighbourhood with important partners on site in an excellent way, and with its spacious interior facilitated smooth operational processes and communications between the expected 600 inhabitants of the building.
In September 2018, the cornerstone was laid, and in May 2023 the building was handed over to the new owner ETH Zurich – a very historic moment!

Die Vision eines Campus für Life Sciences wird Realität
Die Kantone Basel-Stadt und Basel-Landschaft lobten 2009 einen Wettbewerb für die räumliche Entwicklung des Campus Schällemätteli aus. Die Universität Basel hatte in ihrer Strategie 2007 ihre Vision für einen Campus der Life Sciences auf diesem Areal vorgestellt, um ihre rasch wachsenden Institute Biozentrum, Pharmazentrum und das Departement Biomedizin unterzubringen. Das D-BSSE wurde Teil dieses Plans.
Im Jahr 2012, als die Baupläne für das neue Biozentrum in vollem Gange waren, war es an der Zeit, mit den konzeptionellen Arbeiten für den neuen Sitz des D-BSSE zu beginnen. Fünf Jahre nach der Gründung des Departements war klar geworden, dass die Räumlichkeiten, die das D-BSSE von der Universität Basel auf dem Campus Rosental-Mitte gemietet hatte, für die wachsende Zahl der Lehrenden und ihrer Forschungsgruppen sowie für die stetig steigende Zahl der Studierenden in den beiden Masterstudiengängen zu eng wurden.
Wettbewerb, Konzept, Grundsteinlegung
Im Januar 2014 organisierte die ETH Zürich in Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität Basel und den Basler Stadtwerken einen internationalen Architekturwettbewerb, um die zukünftige Gestaltung des neuen Domizils des D-BSSE zu entwickeln. Insgesamt nahmen 69 Teams an diesem Wettbewerb teil; nach einer Vorauswahl reichten schliesslich 17 Teams ihre endgültigen Architekturprojekte ein. Das Projekt mit dem Titel "540 Grad" des Architekturbüros Nickl und Partner aus München überzeugte die Jury einstimmig: Das sechsgeschossige Gebäude erfüllt die wissenschaftlichen und städtebaulichen Anforderungen am besten, verbindet das Forschungs- und Publikumsquartier mit wichtigen Partnern vor Ort in hervorragender Weise und ermöglicht mit seinem großzügigen Innenraum reibungslose Betriebsabläufe und Kommunikation zwischen den erwarteten 600 Bewohnern des Gebäudes.
Im September 2018 wurde der Grundstein gelegt und im Mai 2023 wurde das Gebäude an die neue Eigentümerin ETH Zürich übergeben - ein historischer Moment!
